Jounen Kwéyòl Celebrations: Melting Pot of Melodies

Jounen Kwéyòl Celebrations: Melting Pot of Melodies

What you HEAR!

During Creole Heritage Month, the sound of local music from the traditional bands adds life to the creole celebrations. The sweet rhythms come from musical instruments such as the locally made drums used from dry goatskin and various string instruments. The “Shak-shak”, bamboo flute, accordion, as well as the triangle are all used by the bands and is deep-rooted in our European and African heritage.

The local twist to the traditional songs adds a competitive edge to our St. Lucia music, setting it apart from the other islands in the region. Our beautiful island has produced numerous icons over the years, and bands have sort to feature the local language in their lyrics. Recently, numerous Kuduro (also known as “Dennery Segment”) artists have created songs that are reminiscent of the local folk music but with a modern twist. These infectious and lively beats can be heard all over the airways throughout this month.
