Joyce Destang, O.B.E. – Owner and Managing Director
Joyce Destang is owner and managing director of the Bay Gardens Inn, Bay Gardens Hotel and her flagship, 4-star, beachfront resort property located in the heart of Rodney Bay Village, the Bay Gardens Beach Resort & Spa. Destang has held this position since investing in the Bay Gardens Hotel with her husband, Desmond, in 1994.
As the owner of Bay Gardens Resorts, Destang plays an ongoing senior management role in all three properties. Her entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen have made her a trusted authority in local tourism and mainstay in Saint Lucia’s community and economic development.
Prior to investing in Bay Gardens Resorts, Destang taught secondary school for 15 years. She began a real estate career by purchasing, renovating and selling several rental properties before deciding to expand into hotels—a business traditionally dominated by men on the island.
During her pioneering years in the hotel business, Destang recruited top talent, focused on superior service and helped grow the Bay Gardens brand from one small locally-operated hotel into a trio of first-class properties. She is highly regarded as both a hotelier and businesswoman and has leveraged several key Bay Gardens partnerships, including alliances with the Saint Lucia Football Association and Interval International, a leading timeshare exchange company.
Destang has dedicated her career to supporting Saint Lucia’s Rodney Bay community and has earned a positive reputation that spans the Caribbean. The Destangs have invested over EC$60 million in Saint Lucia and employ more than 200 people — all Caribbean nationals. She is a member of the Caribbean and Saint Lucia Hotel & Tourism Associations, Rodney Bay Village Co-operation and is co-founder of the Rodney Bay Residents’ Association. In 2005, Queen Elizabeth II honored Destang with the award for “Ordinary Officer of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire” for her dedicated service to Saint Lucia’s tourism industry. Bay Gardens Resorts has received multiple industry awards and is widely recognized for outstanding customer service.

Prior to this appointment, she served as General Manager of the award-winning and very successful Bay Gardens Hotel for 13 years. During her tenure, she was responsible for building high levels of repeat business, exceptional customer satisfaction, and maintaining well-trained staff.
Parle was twice nominated by Travel Agent Magazine as one of the most powerful women in travel and tourism in the OECS, and is Saint Lucia’s foremost small hotelier. Her dedication, passion, commitment and professionalism are greatly admired by her peers and employees in the industry.

Waltrude Patrick – General Manager Bay Gardens Hotel and Bay Gardens Inn
An industry professional with over 25 years of hands-on experience, Patrick’s humble beginnings stretched from the town of Gros-Islet, as a teacher, then to Trinidad where she was introduced to the service sector and furthered her academic background. In 1979 she returned to Saint Lucia to begin her career in the hospitality industry at the Islander Hotel. Her diligence, impeccable integrity and naturally welcoming spirit allowed her to rise quickly through the ranks of the Hotel where she now serves as General Manager.
Her tenure as Islander Hotel’s General Manager would come to an end by virtue of an untimely sale of the property. Waltrude then took up the position of General Manager of the Glencastle Resort, a position she held for 2 years before joining the Bay Gardens family in 2002 as General Manager of the newly acquired Bay Gardens Inn. The move to the Bay Gardens Inn was in keeping with her plans opting for the smaller, more intimate hotel property.
Under Waltrude’s stewardship the Bay Gardens Inn furthered the success of the Bay Gardens brand and quickly developed into one the Caribbean’s most successful boutique small hotels. In 2006, Bay Gardens Inn was awarded Best Small Hotel in the Caribbean by Virgin Holidays at the 2006 World Travel Awards. 2006 was also a year of individual awards for Waltrude as the St. Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association bestowed upon her the Professional Industry Achievement Award.
In 2008, Waltrude’s career took yet another turn when she became the General Manager of Bay Gardens Hotel and the Bay Gardens Inn. The story of her illustrious career is still being written as she faces the challenges of the industry.
